The Facilitator. An experienced
group facilitator is critical to the
ideation’s success. It’s usually best not
to have a company executive play that
role as it can make members less
likely to speak freely. An outside con-
sultant or non-threatening internal
person will get better results. Other
key roles are the timekeeper and the
scribe who records ideas on post-its or
flip charts. A good facilitator will rec-
ognize that just as individuals have
different learning styles, creativity
comes in various shapes and sizes. In-
novation styles are different ap-
proaches of idea generation and are
analogous to how different parts of
the brain process information. The
Herrmann Brain Dominance Instru-
ment points out several innovation
styles including: visioning, exploring,
experimenting and modifying. While each of us uses some combina-
tion of these styles, one style generally will predominate. Knowing this,
the facilitator will use a combination of these styles to look at the cre-
ative challenge from multiple perspectives.
Starting the Session Off Right
The ideation starts with introductions, establishing ground rules
and warm-up exercises called icebreakers. A safe environment is established at the beginning of the session. Participants are briefed on the
project and provided with “guardrails” defining the bounds of the idea
session. Participant rank and title are left at the door. Creativity and
