was relatively brief for Canada, shoppers gravitated to economy and value
items, but there was a strong commitment from the core consumers that
kept organic sales growing.
Three-month usage statistics for
Canadian organic consumers in 2009
found that 85 percent had purchased
organic fresh fruits and vegetables,
while 56 percent had purchased organic breads or cereals.
In terms of the grocery categories,
the ten largest categories in 2008
were soya drinks ($47.3 million), milk
($37.2 M), yogurt ($35.4 M), ready-to-eat cereals ($32 M), roasted or
ground coffee ($27.2 M), soup ($19.5
M), eggs ($15.7 M), bread ($13.1 M),
baby food ($11.4 M) and shelf stable
juices and drinks ($9.8 M).
Among tracked imports, coffee is
the top commodity—with a clear majority of it shipped to Canada green
and roasted by domestic companies.
Euromonitor has calculated the
growth in the Canadian organic coffee market at 9 percent in 2010, and
noted that 85 percent of organic coffee is also certified fair trade. Other
studies show the Canadian public
ranks very high in awareness and support of fair trade, with 55 percent having purchased a fair trade labeled
product in 2010 (compared to 44
percent in the U.S.). Olive oil and
tomato sauces also rank high by
value among tracked organic grocery
imports.
The grocery categories with the
highest number of brands competing
in the marketplace include tea, coffee, chocolate, dry pasta and ready-to-eat cereals. Meanwhile, when all
brands are combined, baby food, coffee and tea offer consumers the greatest number of distinct products to
choose from.
It has been estimated that
Canada’s organic market imports
roughly 75 percent of all organic
products sold in the country. Given
that Canada has one of the strongest
economies among the G20 at this time, as well as robust trends in its
organic market and a strong organic regulatory environment, the
country is a natural destination market for many organic producers
and brands.
