Verified seal trademark—our website is
the most comprehensive and accessible non-GMO resource on the web and
including it on verified products helps
get the info out there so that people
can start to learn things like which ingredients might be GMO.
The process by which we verify low-risk status is pretty rigorous, and sometimes we uncover interesting things. In
one case, we had a certified organic
product that included a flavoring with
sugar as an ingredient. In our verification drill-down, we found that the supplier of that flavoring had started using
corn syrup as a sub-input, but hadn’t
told our participant. Anyone looking at
the product label would have felt confident that there were no ingredients
that were at risk for GMOs, but they
would have been wrong.
Unfortunately, the real confusion is
in thinking that there are just tons of
?(?&$+$.@%
products with no GMO risk. Even simple things like apparently single-ingredi-ent dried fruit, like cranberries, are often coated in oil, which could be GMO.
OP: What do you think are the most important strides the Project has made and what
are the most important steps for the future?
Westgate: The most important strides we’ve made are in raising awareness,
both in the industry and in the public at large. And, of course, putting in place
a functional and effective Product Verification Program. The critical thing now
is to maintain the momentum—keep giving everyone positive ways to engage
and celebrating every step we take toward reclaiming our non-GMO future. o
