tion better to attain higher protein
and iron ingestion. One of PrimaSoy’s goals was to use this product to
help address issues of global malnutrition, and it has begun working with
OTC Nutrition to develop soy products fortified with protein, calcium,
iron, vitamin A, magnesium and zinc.
One major trend is a return to ancient grains, and this year SK Food International has introduced a line of
organic ancient grains and grain
flours, including amaranth, millet,
quinoa, sorghum, spelt and teff. Ancient grains carry a high level of protein, omega- 3 fatty acids and
antioxidants and are said to have a
more distinctive and flavorful taste
than modern grains. Amaranth, millet, quinoa, sorghum and teff are all
naturally gluten-free.
Quinoa and amaranth are especially growing in demand based on
the fact they are one of the few plant-based sources of complete protein
that contain no known allergens or
gluten. However, grains that are inherently gluten-free can be contaminated with gluten if they use a shared
facility that also processes products
that contain gluten. To ensure peace
of mind for those who make gluten-free products, Multiple Organics now
offers organic, certified gluten-free
(GF) quinoa and amaranth that are
processed in a dedicated, certified
gluten-free, kosher-parve HACCP facility. Certified GF through the
Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO; creators of the GF
label), these products have to meet a
science-based standard that is confirmed by field inspections. GF
quinoa is available in white, red and
tricolor varieties. These farmers also
benefit from Multiple Organics solar
lighting project launched this year.
In response to the growing de-
mand for quinoa, Specialty Com-
modities Inc. (SCI) and joint-venture
partner Andean Naturals recently in-
troduced organic Royal Quinoa crisps
and Royal Quinoa germ. Royal Quinoa is a larger-grain variety that is grown and
cultivated in small farms at elevations over 13,000 feet on the shores of the Boli-
vian salt flats. It contains up to 13 percent protein and 39 percent protein in
germ form. Technical assistance, cash advances and organic certification is pro-
vided and a HACCP-certified plant in La Paz was recently added.

Multiple Organics recently launched a program to install solar lighting in the homes of armers living in remote areas of Peru with no access to electricity. Instead of traveling hours in rough terrain to buy candles, farmers and their families, like those above, now have access to free, sustainable light. Better lighting makes it easier to study. Education leads to a better future. And, when you se the quinoa and cacao these farmers grow, you become a partner in this project and our story becomes your story.
